Douglas County marks Memorial Day with services across the region
Castle Rock, Sedalia and Highlands Ranch will host Memorial Day services Monday, while county offices close and reopen Tuesday. Fort Logan’s ceremony adds a regional gathering point.

Douglas County will mark Memorial Day with services in Castle Rock, Sedalia, Highlands Ranch and at Fort Logan National Cemetery, giving residents several ways to honor fallen service members close to home. Castle Rock’s ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Sedalia’s will be at 11 a.m. at St. Philip in the Field Church and Bear Canon Cemetery, and Highlands Ranch’s will start at 11:45 a.m. at the Highlands Ranch Veterans Monument. Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver will hold its ceremony from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. MT.
The observances fall on Memorial Day, the federal holiday held on the last Monday in May. The day, originally called Decoration Day, was formalized in 1868 by Grand Army of the Republic Commander-in-Chief John A. Logan. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs describes Memorial Day as the nation’s foremost annual day to mourn and honor deceased service members, and Fort Logan remains one of the region’s most significant remembrance sites, with 17 memorials honoring soldiers from various 20th-century wars.

Each community is marking the day a little differently. Highlands Ranch Metro District said guests should arrive early for the service at the veterans monument, where seating will not be provided, so anyone who may need it should bring a chair. Fort Logan is asking visitors to plan ahead as well: parking is limited, carpooling is encouraged and pets are not allowed except for service animals. Those practical details matter because the ceremonies are expected to draw veterans, families and civic groups across the county.

Douglas County is also using the holiday to remind residents that support for veterans continues after the ceremonies end. The county’s Veterans Service Office helps veterans and spouses with benefits, mental health resources and emergency funds. The office is at 301 Wilcox Street in Castle Rock, and the veterans phone number is 303-663-6200.

County operations will change with the holiday, too. All Douglas County offices will be closed on Monday, May 25, and will reopen Tuesday, May 26. Residents can still handle many transactions online while the offices are closed. The mix of neighborhood services, a countywide closure and a major cemetery gathering shows how Douglas County’s Memorial Day observance blends remembrance with the practical rhythms of a holiday that touches nearly every household.
