Google Fiber Expands Into Douglas County, Starting In Highlands Ranch

Google Fiber announced expanded service into unincorporated Douglas County, launching construction in Highlands Ranch during the summer of 2025 and scheduling availability of residential and small business connections beginning in the first quarter of 2026. The company serves households in 19 states, including Colorado, and said the Highlands Ranch build is the first step toward broader county coverage.

Alberto Garcia, government affairs and community manager for GFiber, described the companys aims for the county. "GFiber’s goal in Douglas County is to provide expanded internet access for residents that is fast and reliable, fairly-priced, and customer-focused, which will ultimately fuel the county’s economic growth, education, and quality of life," he said.

The immediate impact will be additional consumer choice for high speed broadband in parts of the county that are currently served by existing cable and telecom providers. Fiber to the premises typically delivers higher symmetric upload and download capacity compared with older technologies, which can improve remote work performance, cloud based business functions, telehealth access, and distance learning for students. For households that rely on multiple simultaneous video streams and video conferencing, the technical upgrade can reduce congestion and latency.

For local leaders and planners, the GFiber rollout carries fiscal and regulatory implications. The company is continuing to explore other unincorporated areas in Douglas County for future construction and is negotiating with nearby cities including Castle Pines about municipal access and franchise arrangements. Those negotiations, along with permitting and construction timelines, will shape how quickly additional neighborhoods gain access.

GFiber has also started outreach in the county, establishing relationships with community groups and nonprofits and contributing to local efforts while construction proceeds. Such engagement can help target connections to community anchors like schools and libraries, which play a role in boosting digital inclusion.
