High Winds Could Trigger Power Outages in Douglas County
Highlands Ranch Metro District reposted Xcel Energy advisories on December 16 warning that strong winds and very dry conditions forecast for December 17 could prompt a Public Safety Power Shutoff or unplanned outages along the Front Range. The notice explained why residents in Highlands Ranch might experience unplanned outages and highlighted how restoration could take longer because of enhanced safety procedures.

On December 16 Highlands Ranch Metro District notified residents by reposting Xcel Energy advisories that a strong wind event combined with very dry conditions on December 17 created a risk of a Public Safety Power Shutoff or unplanned outages across the Front Range. The Metro District stated that Highlands Ranch was not included in the planned PSPS area for the scheduled outage, but it warned that Enhanced Powerline Safety Settings could nevertheless cause unplanned outages and extended restoration times.
Enhanced Powerline Safety Settings require utility crews to inspect lines and equipment before restoring power, a procedural requirement that can lengthen outages after an event. The advisory also reminded residents not to call 911 for power outages and directed them to Xcel Energy’s outage map and preparedness tips for the latest status and guidance. At the time of the repost, Highlands Ranch Metro District said it did not anticipate interruptions to Metro District services but pledged to continue monitoring conditions and provide updates.
The potential for unplanned outages has direct consequences for Douglas County residents who rely on electricity for heating, medical devices, water pumps and local businesses. Extended restoration times can affect traffic signals, commercial operations and critical infrastructure, and can strain households without backup power. Local government and utility procedures that prioritize public safety reduce the risk of fires during high wind and dry conditions, but they also mean residents need to plan for temporary loss of service.

For community preparedness, residents should follow official outage maps for real time information and heed guidance from local authorities about non emergency reporting channels. Highlands Ranch Metro District’s announcement aimed to clarify that absence from a planned PSPS list did not eliminate the possibility of interruptions under enhanced safety settings, and that response procedures could delay full restoration.
County and municipal officials continue to monitor weather and utility updates. Highlands Ranch Metro District said it would provide further information as conditions evolve, and residents are advised to check official channels for any new advisories or service bulletins.
