Rep. Mike Amyx filed to run again for the Kansas House, keeping one of Douglas County’s most recognizable Democrats in the 45th District race and adding another early marker to a countywide election year that already has nine House seats on the ballot.

Amyx’s district stretches through parts of Lawrence and Lecompton and portions of Grant, Kanwaka, Lecompton and Wakarusa townships, putting west-Lawrence neighborhoods and rural township voters squarely in the center of the contest. With the Kansas candidate-filing deadline set for Monday, June 1, at noon, and the primary set for Aug. 4 followed by the general election on Nov. 3, the filing is one more sign that Douglas County’s legislative map is starting to harden well before summer.

The current county candidate list, maintained by the Douglas County Clerk as election officer and updated as valid filings come in, already shows Kansas House districts 5, 10, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 47 and 117 open in the 2026 cycle. The county’s sample-ballot page is organized by precinct, giving voters an early look at which names will appear where once the filing window closes.

Amyx brings deep local roots into the race. Before winning his House seat in 2019, he spent 18 years on the Lawrence City Commission and five years on the Douglas County Commission, a record that gives him name recognition across both city hall and county government. The Kansas House lists him as House Assistant Minority Leader, and he serves on the Appropriations, General Government Budget, Higher Education Budget, Interstate Cooperation and House Select Investigating committees, all posts that keep him close to the budget battles and policy negotiations that shape Topeka.

Elsewhere in Douglas County, the picture is mixed. District 5 already has both a Democratic challenger and an incumbent Republican in the field. District 10 has only the incumbent on file. District 42 has a current Republican and another Republican challenger. District 44 has only Democrat Barbara Ballard filed so far, while District 46 has only incumbent Brooklynne Mosley on file.

That early lineup suggests 2026 will not be just about one or two marquee races. It is also about incumbency, open space on the Democratic bench and the degree to which Lawrence, Lecompton and the surrounding townships can still reshape representation in Topeka. As filings continue, the county’s legislative map is beginning to tell voters where the real fights are likely to be.
