Douglas County’s underwater search and recovery team pulled the body of a 20-year-old Olathe man from Clinton Lake Monday morning, ending an overnight search that began after witnesses saw him go underwater near Clinton Marina about 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said crews kept searching through the evening, then suspended operations at 8:40 p.m. because darkness made it unsafe to continue. The search resumed at daylight Monday, when the county’s dive team located the man’s body. The sheriff’s office offered condolences to his family and friends as the recovery brought a grim close to a fast-moving emergency at one of the county’s busiest recreation spots.

Clinton Lake is a major public recreation area, with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers managing about 7,000 acres of water and 15,000 acres of surrounding land. Clinton State Park includes the marina, beaches, boat ramps, cabins, campgrounds, picnic areas and trails, drawing boaters, anglers, swimmers and families from Douglas County and beyond. That mix of heavy use and open water makes quick response critical when someone disappears below the surface.

Kansas swim-beach guidance says state park beaches do not have lifeguards and swimmers enter at their own risk. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says life jackets reduce the risk of drowning while boating and around natural water, a warning that carries extra weight at a lake where sudden trouble can unfold in seconds. Anyone heading to Clinton Lake this season should treat marinas, shorelines and boat ramps as higher-risk areas, especially when wind, fatigue, alcohol or crowded conditions are involved.

The death also echoes a previous tragedy at the lake. In July 2024, 23-year-old Cesar Cardenas Olivas of Topeka died after being seen struggling in the water, a case that prompted renewed attention to no-lifeguard warnings and the availability of free life jackets at Bloomington Beach during flooding-related closures. Monday’s recovery showed once again that Clinton Lake can shift from a routine outing to a rescue scene in moments, even near familiar access points like Clinton Marina.
