A home NCAA regional at Hoglund Ballpark would send a surge of baseball visitors through Lawrence, filling hotels, bars and restaurants around campus while turning a 2,500-seat ballpark that already drew 2,674 fans into a postseason draw with room to overflow.

D1Baseball and Baseball America project Kansas as a No. 7 seed that would host an NCAA regional in Lawrence, a step that would put the Jayhawks in position to play meaningful games at home and bring visiting teams, coaches, families and fans into the city. For a program that has reached the NCAA Regional only six times in school history, a chance to host would be one of the biggest moments in Kansas baseball history.

The timing also reflects how far Dan Fitzgerald’s team has pushed the program. Kansas Athletics said the Jayhawks were ranked No. 16 nationally after a 9-7 win over No. 20 Nebraska on April 21, 2026, a victory that set a new Hoglund Ballpark attendance record with a standing-room-only crowd of 2,674. That win pushed Kansas to 30 victories for a third straight season, the first such streak for the program since 2008-10, and the Jayhawks had won 14 of their previous 15 games.

The home-field momentum has been building all spring. Kansas opened its 2026 home schedule at Hoglund Ballpark on March 6 against St. Thomas, and the Jayhawks have played in front of crowds that have pushed beyond the listed capacity of 2,500. If Lawrence lands a regional, the same atmosphere that has energized Kansas players would likely spill into the surrounding area, from campus traffic to late-night business for nearby eateries and bars.

It would also cap a rare run for Fitzgerald, who was named Kansas head coach on June 15, 2022 and signed a six-year contract extension after the 2025 season. Under his watch, Kansas reached the NCAA Regional in 2025 for the sixth time in program history and the first time under his leadership, and KU says the Jayhawks set a program-record 42 regular-season wins that year.

Kansas’ 2026 schedule includes 23 games at Hoglund Ballpark and a 30-game Big 12 slate, giving the Jayhawks plenty of chances to keep climbing. If the projections hold, Lawrence will not just be watching a postseason run unfold. It will be hosting it.
