Lawrence compost event switches to self-load drop-off after storms

After storms pushed more debris into the system, Lawrence’s compost site will keep serving residents May 2, but city loaders will not be on hand.

Residents heading to Lawrence’s compost facility this weekend will not find the usual city loaders waiting to fill trailers and truck beds. The City of Lawrence switched Saturday’s planned city-load event to a self-load and drop-off format after recent severe thunderstorms sent more material through the facility and kept crews focused on storm debris.

The event is set for Saturday, May 2, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the compost facility, 1420 E. 11th St. City residents can still drop off eligible yard waste and load compost and woodchips themselves, but they will need to bring their own tools, such as shovels and pitchforks. The city says the facility remains one of its most popular environmental services, and the change is meant to preserve access while reducing pressure on staff and equipment.

The practical difference is straightforward: no city loading equipment will be available for this event. Residents who want compost or woodchips will have to self-load, and yard-waste drop-off will still be open. That makes the weekend useful for spring cleanup, but only for people prepared to do the lifting themselves.

Pricing depends on what is being picked up or dropped off. Self-loaded compost and woodchips are free for quantities of 20 gallons or less and cost $10 for larger amounts. Yard-waste drop-off costs $10 for small and large loads and $20 for extra-large loads. The facility accepts cash only, with exact change recommended, and bills larger than $20 are not accepted.

Lawrence residents also need to bring proof that they live in the city. A recent city utility bill and matching photo ID are required. Accepted yard waste includes grass, leaves and brush. The city does not accept plastic bags, lumber, pallets, sod, stones, food waste, metal, plastic or root balls. Brush must be loose, no longer than 4 feet and no more than 8 inches in diameter.

The adjustment comes as Lawrence moves through its regular compost season, which typically runs on Saturdays from March through December, weather permitting. Curbside yard-waste collection is also seasonal, generally on Mondays from March through mid-December, weather permitting. Bundles for that pickup cannot exceed 5 feet in length or 18 inches in diameter and must weigh no more than 65 pounds.

For residents who miss this weekend’s setup, the next city-load compost event is scheduled for Saturday, June 6, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will be open to everyone. For now, the May 2 change gives Douglas County households a clear way to clear storm-damaged yards without waiting for the next full-service loading day.
