Women in Dubois County who might skip a mammogram because Jasper is too far, the workday is too tight or the cost feels uncertain got a local option at the Dubois County Health Department, where the Deaconess Mobile Breast Center brought 3D screening to town.

The mobile unit was scheduled at the health department in Jasper for Thursday, April 30, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. CDT, or 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. EDT. Deaconess said its mobile breast center is the first mobile breast center in Southern Indiana to offer 3D mammography, putting a higher-level screening tool into a setting residents could reach without traveling to a larger breast imaging center.

The county health department said the service was intended to ensure all women have access to an annual screening mammogram, regardless of ability to pay or travel. It also noted that mammograms are covered by most health plans. Appointments and questions were directed to mobilemammo@deaconess.com or 812-450-6266.

Shawn Werner, the Dubois County Health Department administrative director, said the partnership helps provide women in the community with an opportunity to get necessary screening regardless of the ability to pay or travel to a breast imaging center. That local access matters in a county where preventive care often depends on how far someone can drive and how easy it is to find a slot that fits a busy schedule.

The timing also lined up with national screening guidance. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the United States Preventive Services Task Force recommends mammography every two years for women ages 40 to 74 at average risk. The task force issued its final breast cancer screening recommendation on April 30, 2024, recommending screening start at age 40 and continue through age 74. The American Cancer Society has said that update is more consistent with its own guidance.

Deaconess says its breast services include 3D digital mammography with same-day appointments at breast imaging locations, along with mobile screening throughout the region. Bringing the unit to the Dubois County Health Department tied that service to a familiar public-health setting and matched the department’s broader mission of prevention, health education, screenings and networking with other organizations.

For families across Dubois County, the practical message was direct: a recommended screening was available closer to home, with insurance coverage for most patients and a mobile unit designed to remove some of the barriers that keep people from making the appointment in the first place.
