Huntingburg Awarded $2.268M to Rebuild Veterans Parkway, Dubois Among Recipients
Huntingburg won $2,268,000 from INDOT to completely rebuild Veterans Parkway (E 14th Street) between Chestnut Street and US 231, part of a $180M statewide award to 50 rural communities.

The City of Huntingburg received $2,268,000 from the Indiana Department of Transportation to completely rebuild Veterans Parkway, also known as E 14th Street, between Chestnut Street and U.S. 231/Main Street, Gov. INDOT announced in the Feb. 18, 2026 award round to 50 rural communities. The grant is construction funding for a full dig out and reconstruction to federal highway standards that Huntingburg officials say is needed for the corridor.
Mayor Neil Elkins described the condition driving the project, saying "the street was not built to sustain the number of vehicles, or the number of heavy trucks that presently utilize the road that was extended with the addition of the railroad overpass." Huntingburg's plan calls for a complete rebuild of the pavement and includes hopes to improve a major intersection within the project limits, city reporting states.
INDOT's program for this round is focused on construction, with the agency providing financial participation in design, engineering and right-of-way acquisition; communities must supply at least a 20 percent local funding match and meet federal requirements to receive the money, INDOT said as reported by Vincennes PBS. The Feb. 18 announcement did not include a construction start date or a project schedule for Huntingburg, leaving the timing of design, right-of-way purchases and bidding uncertain.
Dubois County will receive additional funding in the same round. Vincennes PBS reported that Dubois County will get approximately $2.8 million for safety improvements at various locations, while Huntingburg's award is listed precisely at $2,268,000 in INDOT and local project listings. Those county funds are slated for safety projects rather than bridge rehabilitation, according to the statewide breakdown.

The Huntingburg award is part of nearly $180 million distributed statewide in this round, with roughly $130 million dedicated to rehabilitating or replacing bridges rated in poor condition, INDOT said via the regional reporting. Other projects funded in the same list include a Daviess County bridge on CR E 975 N over North Fork Prairie Creek for $2,728,000.00, Spencer County work on Old SR 45 for $3,589,600.00, and Whitestown roundabout improvements at Whitestown Parkway and CR 525 E for $2,273,600.00.
Local officials in Huntingburg must now secure the required local match and complete design and right-of-way steps before construction dollars can be spent. The award secures construction funding but shifts near-term responsibilities to the city and county for engineering, property acquisition and meeting federal procurement and reporting rules. City officials and the Dubois County highway department have not yet published a timeline or identified funding sources to cover the 20 percent match.
