Huntingburg Closes W. 19th Street for Tree Removal Until 2 p.m.
A hazard tree on W. 19th Street forced a full road closure Thursday morning; the Huntingburg Street Department expects to reopen the block by 2 p.m.

The Huntingburg Street Department shut down W. 19th Street between Redbud Court and Chestnut Street Thursday morning to remove a hazard tree, with the roadway scheduled to reopen by approximately 2:00 p.m.
The closure affects a residential stretch that carries neighborhood traffic through the morning school-dropoff window and along delivery routes serving that section of the city. Emergency vehicles using W. 19th as a response corridor would need to reroute during the work window. Standard orange construction zone signage and detour markers, conforming to the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices, were posted to direct drivers through alternate paths.
The Street Department's decision to fully close the roadway rather than dispatch a routine curbside crew points to the severity of the tree's condition. Under city ordinance, the Street Department handles curbside tree limb collection on the fourth Friday of each month for routine debris, and deploys emergency curbside crews only after a severe storm event. A full lane closure requiring direct crew and equipment access to the road surface itself signals the tree posed a hazard that standard limb-collection protocols could not safely address from the curb.
The Board of Public Works & Safety governs the Street Department under the City of Huntingburg's broader Department of Public Works, which also houses the Fire Department, Police Department, Public Safety office, and Wastewater Department. That chain of oversight means the call to close the street fell within established institutional authority, not an ad hoc decision.
The closure lands as the Street Department manages concurrent infrastructure work across Huntingburg's 6,512-resident city, including a 14th Street Reconstruction and a 9th Street Extension, reflecting an active season for the department on multiple fronts.
