Jasper marks fifth annual Juneteenth community event June 6

Jasper’s fifth annual Juneteenth Community Event drew residents to the Thyen-Clark Cultural Center Atrium on Saturday, June 6, as Jasper Arts and The Jasper Public Library used the holiday to put history in front of the public. The gathering marked Juneteenth as more than a single observance in Dubois County, showing it has become a recurring part of Jasper’s civic calendar.

The event was framed as both a community celebration and an educational observance tied to June 19, 1865, the date commonly recognized as the end of slavery in the United States. That focus gave the afternoon a clear purpose: to help local families, students and adults understand not just the holiday itself, but why it carries national meaning.

Multiple booths featured community members and organizations centered on historical figures, events and activities. That structure made the program more than a social stopover. It created space for people to learn, talk and engage with the history behind Juneteenth in a public setting, with The Jasper Public Library adding the educational piece and Jasper Arts providing the cultural venue.

The partnership between the two institutions also showed how local public spaces are being used to widen access to civic education. By holding the event in the atrium and setting it for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on a Saturday, organizers made it easier for families to attend and for the holiday to reach a broad audience. After five years, the Juneteenth program has moved into Jasper’s regular public life as a familiar June event with a clear message: the history of emancipation belongs in the center of community conversation, not on the margins.
