Jasper Parks Board Converts Underused Pickleball Courts to Futsal at Gutzweiler Park
Jasper's Parks Board voted to convert underused pickleball courts at Gutzweiler Park to futsal, committing $2,500 in city funds while a $60,000 professional surface could follow if demand warrants it.

The Jasper Parks and Recreation Board voted to convert the pickleball courts at Gutzweiler Park into futsal courts, committing approximately $2,500 in city funds to a conversion driven by consistent underuse of the existing courts and growing local demand for small-sided soccer space.
The city's contribution covers fence repairs, surface improvements, lighting restoration, and labor at the 500 E 16th St. facility. Indiana Southwest Futball Club, known locally as ISFC, takes on the startup work the city will not: painting the 5-on-5 court lines and purchasing goals for the new layout.
Greg Fuhs, representing ISFC, brought the proposal to the Board's March meeting and framed it explicitly as a low-risk pilot. "We're looking for a proof of concept," Fuhs said. The two-phase structure is designed to gauge actual use before the club commits to a far more expensive permanent upgrade. "Having two more hard surface courts where we can get teams outside two or three times a week would be a huge benefit," he added.

During the initial phase, courts will run on a first-come, first-served basis. If usage holds through year one, ISFC plans to launch a fundraising campaign targeting the $60,000 estimated cost for professional futsal surfacing materials. The club has cleared similar fundraising bars before, having raised between $30,000 and $40,000 for its indoor facility project. Should ISFC follow through on permanent surfacing, the city would likely shift from open access to a reservation system comparable to the shelter house booking process.
Pickleball players who use Gutzweiler's courts stand to lose their primary spot at this site. Whether the park department will retain pickleball lines alongside the futsal markings for multi-use play was not confirmed at the March meeting, and the Parks Board has not publicly identified alternative court locations for displaced players.

Board members flagged a logistical constraint during deliberations: Gutzweiler has only four designated parking spaces. ISFC representatives acknowledged the limitation but said it is manageable because most youth participants arrive by drop-off rather than with parents who need to park on-site.
Exact timelines for when repairs, painting, and goal installation will be completed had not been publicly released as of the Board's March approval. Jasper Parks staff are expected to issue scheduling updates as work gets underway.
