Jasper Reveals Virtual Tour of Regional Wellness Center, Announces Lower Debt

Mayor Dean Vonderheide closed out his tenure at the Jasper Common Council with a video fly-through of the proposed Regional Wellness Center, a project he has championed for years, and announced a financing picture that reduces the city's debt exposure and cuts the repayment term to 10 years.

Vonderheide made no secret of his enthusiasm for the presentation. "Anyone I've shown this video, they get really excited," he said, noting he has watched it about 30 times himself. "You know, we're getting a heck of a facility. And paying it off in 10 years."

The Regional Wellness Center was included in Jasper's last comprehensive plan, shaped in part through community discussions that accompanied that planning process. Vonderheide has described the project as a direct response to what residents pushed for during that process.

The project's financial stack draws from three major funding streams. The Better Together campaign has raised $14.1 million. The city has budgeted $5 million from a combination of TIF, EDIT, Hoosier Enduring Legacy Project funds, and Jasper Food and Beverage tax revenue. A $5 million READI 2.0 grant rounds out the listed funding components, bringing the sum of those three sources to $24.1 million.

City officials characterized the financing arrangement as a material improvement over earlier projections, one that both lowers the city's total debt exposure and shortens the bond compared to previous terms. The 10-year payoff timeline, as stated by the mayor, represents a notably compressed repayment horizon for a facility of this scale.

The presentation at Thursday's council meeting marked Vonderheide's final appearance as mayor before the Jasper Common Council, capping several years of advocacy for the wellness center.
