Jasper Wildcats Defeat BNL 7-2, Smith Strikes Out 10 in Win

Bryn Smith struck out 10 batters and held Bedford North Lawrence to four hits, while the Wildcats manufactured six runs through the first three innings and never looked back, defeating the Stars 7-2 at home Thursday to move to 3-3 on the season.

Smith set the tone immediately as Jasper struck for three runs in the first inning, leaning on aggressive baserunning and capitalizing on BNL defensive errors to open the scoring. Three more came in the third, highlighted by a run-scoring single from Lexi Elkins that pushed the lead to 6-0. Jasper finished with seven stolen bases on the afternoon, a number that captures how relentlessly the Wildcats pressured BNL's battery from first pitch to last.

Smith and B.B. Barrix each went 2-for-the-day at the plate, giving Jasper a balanced performance that complemented what Smith was doing from the circle.

BNL did not go quietly in the sixth. Jaden Schofield reached on a single, Sara Williams stroked a double, and Karsyn Coleman drove in a run with a single to account for both Stars runs. But the deficit proved insurmountable against a Jasper team that had dictated the game's terms from the opening frame.

BNL coach Brad Gilbert offered a candid read of what happened. "We dug ourselves a hole early and couldn't climb out of it. We have to do a better job of putting the ball in play. We will get back to work and they will improve," he said.

The loss dropped BNL to 0-6. The Stars were set to host an invitational weekend, giving Gilbert's squad a concentrated stretch of games to find their footing before the schedule tightens further.

For Jasper, Smith's 10-strikeout outing, paired with production from Elkins and Barrix in the middle of the lineup, positions the Wildcats well heading into the April conference stretch that will shape their sectional draw.
