Seeded sixth and given little reason to be favored, Jasper native Jeb Prechtel dismantled the top three seeds at the Southern Conference Wrestling Championships and walked out of Asheville, North Carolina as the 157-pound champion, earning Bellarmine University's only bid to the NCAA Division I National Championships.

Prechtel opened the tournament at the University of North Carolina Asheville by pinning No. 3 seed Joeseph Giordano of Gardner-Webb in 6:53. He then turned around and pinned No. 2 seed Cavarius Liddie of Chattanooga in just 1:54 in the second round, two falls that set up a championship match against the man everyone expected to win the bracket.

In the final, Prechtel faced No. 1 seed Kyrel Leavell of The Citadel. The match went the distance and Prechtel outlasted Leavell for an 11-10 decision, claiming the conference title and, with it, the SoCon's single automatic bid to nationals. The win made Prechtel only the second SoCon champion in Bellarmine program history.

The reaction among wrestling fans online reflected genuine surprise at the result. Forum users on IndianaMat pointed to Prechtel's high school career as context, with one commenter writing, "Doesn't make state, but goes to D1 nationals. Great story, whatever the case." Another user offered brief but pointed background: "Jeb never made it out of the Evansville semi state either. Great wrestler but had bad draws."

Those comments underscore what the bracket sheet confirms: Prechtel entered as the six seed out of nine in a weight class offering a single NCAA bid, and he beat every seeded wrestler standing between him and Cleveland.

Prechtel will now represent Bellarmine at the NCAA Division I National Championships, set for March 19-21 at Rocket Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.
