John Richter Faces Felony Escape, Resisting Charges After Dubois Courthouse Flight

John Richter, 37, of Chicago, allegedly fled courthouse security while being taken into custody at the Dubois County Courthouse in Jasper after a Dubois Superior Court hearing, prompting prosecutors to file Escape and Resisting Law Enforcement charges and a combined cash-only bond of $40,000.

Richter was in court on Wednesday, March 4, for a fact-finding hearing on a petition to revoke his pre-trial release in a pending drug-related case identified as Cause No. 19D01-2503-F3-000260. At the conclusion of that hearing, Judge Anthony Quinn ordered Richter taken into custody and set an additional $15,000 cash-only bond, court reports show.

According to court and law enforcement accounts, while courthouse security officers were escorting Richter into custody he allegedly fled from the security staff. Another member of the Dubois County Courthouse security team apprehended Richter on the courthouse first floor. Multiple officers from the Jasper Police Department and the Dubois County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene following the incident.

Prosecutors filed new counts tied to the alleged flight: Escape, classified as a Level 5 felony, and Resisting Law Enforcement, classified as a Class A misdemeanor. Those classifications were recorded by the Dubois County Prosecutor’s Office when the additional charges were lodged after the March 4 incident.

Richter appeared again in Dubois Superior Court on Thursday, March 5, for an initial hearing on the newly filed Escape and Resisting Law Enforcement charges. At that hearing Judge Quinn set an additional $25,000 cash-only bond on the new case, bringing Richter’s total required cash bond to $40,000 to be released from the Dubois County Security Center. The combined bond reflects the $15,000 cash-only bond set at the March 4 hearing plus the $25,000 cash-only bond entered on March 5.

Court records list the underlying matter as a pending set of drug-related charges in the Dubois Superior Court docket under Cause No. 19D01-2503-F3-000260.
