Traffic was blocked on Cherry Street in Huntingburg after a structure fire sent multiple crews to North Cherry Street, with officials telling drivers to stay out of the area between 6th Street and 10th Street. No injuries were reported in the initial response, but road closures were expected to last for several hours as firefighters worked the scene.

The fire was first reported around 4:01 p.m. Sunday, April 27, 2026, and witnesses reported hearing loud popping noises coming from the property. Dispatch said multiple crews were on scene, and emergency responders moved quickly to contain the blaze while keeping the street closed to through traffic.

Huntingburg Fire Department Assistant Chief Scott Patberg said the call came in a little after 4 p.m. and firefighters were on scene within about four minutes. When they arrived, they found a 40-by-68-foot pole barn in the back of the property fully involved, indicating the fire centered on a large outbuilding rather than a home in the front of the property.

The exact cause of the fire had not been released, and officials had not said how much damage the structure sustained. What was clear Sunday evening was the scale of the response in a residential and business corridor of Huntingburg, where any extended closure on Cherry Street can affect nearby homes, local traffic and emergency access while crews continue to work the scene.
