Forsyth County Schools settles age discrimination lawsuit with former counselor

Forsyth County Schools has settled a federal age-discrimination lawsuit filed by a former school counselor, ending a case that had already reached mediation in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. The district has not disclosed the settlement amount or terms, leaving unanswered whether public money will cover the cost.

The case was captioned Dressler v. Forsyth County School District, 2:24-cv-00232, and had been moving through federal court before the agreement was reached. A judge ordered mediation on July 15 and set requirements for both sides before that session began, a sign the dispute had become serious enough to involve formal court intervention rather than quiet internal handling.

The lawsuit mattered beyond the two parties named in it because Forsyth County Schools is one of the county’s largest public employers. Its workforce stretches across classrooms and campuses, including teachers, paraprofessionals, office staff, bus drivers, maintenance crews and administrators. Any discrimination claim against a system that large can raise questions about hiring, evaluations, reassignment decisions and how employee complaints are handled before they become lawsuits.

For families and school employees, the biggest gap now is transparency. The settlement closes the court fight, but it does not explain what, if anything, changed inside the district or whether the school system admitted any wrongdoing. It also leaves taxpayers without a public accounting of how much the district paid to resolve the case, or whether the money came from operating funds, reserves or another source.

The settlement adds to a legal history that already includes other public employment and civil-rights disputes involving the district. Forsyth County Schools settled a sexual harassment lawsuit in 2019, and in 2023 the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights issued a resolution agreement involving the school system. That record is likely to keep attention on how Forsyth County Schools responds when workplace complaints surface.

The latest agreement also follows reports that settlement talks had been underway before the case was resolved. For a district that serves families from Cumming across Forsyth County, the issue now is less about the lawsuit itself than about whether school leaders will spell out how the matter was handled and what safeguards are in place for older workers going forward.
