14-year-old girl hospitalized after scooter crash with truck in Fresno County
A 14-year-old girl was thrown from an e-scooter when a truck hit her at Weldon Avenue and First/McKinley avenues, leaving her hospitalized Saturday evening.

A 14-year-old girl was hospitalized after a truck hit her electric scooter near Weldon Avenue and First/McKinley avenues in Fresno County, a crash that ejected her from the scooter just after 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
California Highway Patrol spokesperson Mike Salas said the girl and a 12-year-old riding behind her were traveling north on Mayfair Drive as they approached Weldon Avenue. CHP said the 14-year-old failed to stop at the intersection before the collision, and the truck struck her as she entered the crossing.
No other injuries were reported. The girl’s condition was serious enough to require hospitalization, and investigators were still working to piece together how the crash unfolded at the Fresno County intersection.
The wreck adds a local face to a broader safety problem that has been drawing more attention from doctors and transportation researchers. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission released an April 2026 micromobility injuries report covering 2017 through 2024, and the agency said e-scooter injuries continued to rise. University of California, San Francisco researchers had already warned in 2024 that e-scooter injuries were increasing sharply nationwide.

That national trend matters on streets like Weldon Avenue, where younger riders, larger vehicles and neighborhood traffic converge in seconds. The collision shows how quickly a routine ride can turn into a serious injury when a scooter moves into an intersection without a full stop and a driver has little time to react.
For Fresno County families, the case is another reminder that scooters are not harmless toys once they reach street speed. A 14-year-old and a 12-year-old were riding together, but only one mistake at one crossing was enough to send a child to the hospital. CHP said the investigation remains ongoing.
