78-Year-Old Woman Found Dead After SUV Crash Near Pine Flat Lake

A 78-year-old woman was found dead after her tan Lexus SUV went off Trimmer Springs Road near Pine Flat Lake, leaving investigators with one central question: why the vehicle crossed lanes before it went down a steep embankment, overturned multiple times and threw her from the SUV.

The California Highway Patrol said it received a call at 5:30 p.m. Friday asking for help locating the woman after she failed to meet a reporting party at Kirch Flat on Thursday. CHP officers and Fresno County Sheriff's deputies launched a search of the Kirch Flat area, using aerial assistance from both agencies, but did not immediately find her or the vehicle.

A Fresno County Sheriff's deputy sergeant found the woman and the tan Lexus at 8:40 a.m. Saturday along Trimmer Springs Road, west of Maxon Road, in Fresno County. Investigators said the Lexus had been traveling west when it crossed lanes for reasons still under investigation, then dropped down the embankment and rolled several times.

Authorities said the woman was not wearing a seatbelt. They also said it remains unknown whether drugs or alcohol played any role in the crash. Those unanswered questions now sit at the center of the investigation, which remains active as CHP and the Fresno County Sheriff's Office work to reconstruct the final moments before the SUV went off the roadway.

For people headed to Pine Flat Lake, the crash site is on a winding stretch of Trimmer Springs Road west of Maxon Road, a route that leads into the lake area and nearby recreation spots. The collision adds a grim reminder that even familiar foothill roads can turn dangerous quickly, especially where steep drop-offs follow the pavement. CHP has not said whether the crash affected traffic or whether any ongoing safety concerns remain at the scene.
