Clovis High knocks off Clovis West 54-44, threatens 20-year TRAC reign
Clovis High beat Clovis West 54-44, moving to 19-9 and 8-1 and putting the Cougars a win away from ending Clovis West’s 20-year TRAC title streak.

Clovis High delivered a signature 54-44 victory over Clovis West Friday, a result that thrust the Cougars to 19-9 overall and 8-1 in Tri-River Athletic Conference play and pushed them to the brink of ending Clovis West’s two-decade dominance of the TRAC.
The game turned in the second quarter when Clovis put together a 23-6 stretch that built a cushion the Cougars would protect the rest of the way. Senior guard Sadie Sin led Clovis with a game-high 28 points; Sin is a Long Beach State signee whose scoring and calm late in the half helped maintain the margin. Clovis entered the game ranked No. 16 in California by Cal-Hi Sports, while Clovis West carried a No. 7 state ranking.
Defense set the tone for Clovis. Coach Cooper Steele emphasized the emphasis at halftime and afterward. “They just kept working on what we talked about,” he said. “Tonight was all about defense. I thought we were phenomenal on defense. We made them earf a lot of their buckets, and of course they did because they’re Clovis West, and they have great players, but I didn’t see a lot of easy ones. We really focused in on staying in front, just guarding them, blocking out, and I think we did a good job.” Steele added a brief assessment of his roster’s approach: “I don’t have to explain that to them,” and, “They’re workers, man. They work, they understand what’s at task, and I won’t have to say much.”
The loss marked only Clovis West’s fifth league home loss in the past 20 years, underscoring the historic nature of the result for local hoops. The teams met earlier this season on Jan. 20, when Clovis West won 54-50, leaving the season series split and setting up a climactic late-season race for league bragging rights and playoff positioning.

Beyond the headline matchup, the broader Fresno County high school landscape shifted this weekend. Buchanan’s boys continued their strong run, improving to 24-3 with a 54-39 victory over Clovis North; senior guard Desmon Patton scored 19 points in that game. State ranking movement and late-season outcomes like Friday’s will help determine CIF Division I seeding and regional brackets as teams prepare for postseason play.
For local families, students, and boosters, the Cougars’ victory is more than one win. A change at the top of the TRAC would ripple into attendance, youth exposure, and community pride across Fresno County, where high-school programs serve as both athletic incubators and community gathering points.
Clovis can clinch the outright TRAC championship with a win when it hosts Central East on Tuesday, a rematch after Clovis previously beat Central East 51-47 on the road. If Clovis finishes the job, it would end a 20-year run of titles by Clovis West and reshape the conference picture heading into the playoffs.
