Clovis man dies in Bass Lake rollover crash, CHP says
A 72-year-old Clovis man died when his pickup failed to take a sharp curve on Road 274 near Bass Lake and rolled into an embankment, CHP said.

A 72-year-old Clovis man died after his 2009 Dodge Ram 2500 left Road 274 near Fawn Point Lane in Bass Lake, overturned and crashed down an embankment in the early hours of Friday, May 1, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP said officers responded at about 3:46 a.m. on the eastern side of Bass Lake in Madera County. The truck was traveling northbound on Road 274 at an unknown speed when the driver failed to negotiate a sharp curve. The vehicle then left the roadway, struck a tree and boulders, overturned and came to rest on its roof about 30 feet down an embankment.
Authorities said the man was wearing a seat belt, but he was pinned inside the truck after the rollover. Emergency personnel tried life-saving measures at the scene, but he died from his injuries.

The crash is still under investigation. CHP Oakhurst is asking anyone with information to call 559-658-6590. Local CHP public information officer J. Buttgereit, ID 18970, is handling the case.
For Fresno and Clovis families heading to Bass Lake, the crash is another reminder that Road 274 is not a simple mountain shortcut. The corridor around Fawn Point Lane includes sharp curves, steep drop-offs and narrow shoulders, conditions that can turn a moment of inattention into a deadly rollover, especially before sunrise when visibility is limited and driver reaction time is shorter.

The fatal wreck also fits a pattern that local officials have seen before on the Bass Lake-Oakhurst route. A separate fatal crash on Road 274 south of Fawn Point Lane drew attention there in past years, underscoring the risk on a roadway that carries steady traffic from the Valley to mountain recreation areas.
For residents driving up from Fresno County for fishing, camping or a day at the lake, the details of this crash point to the basics that matter most on mountain roads: slow down before curves, avoid driving sleepy in the pre-dawn hours, and do not assume a seat belt will prevent every serious injury in a rollover. On Road 274, even one missed turn can send a vehicle off the pavement and into terrain that is hard to see and harder to survive.
