The Planet Fitness at 634 Shaw Ave. in Clovis has set a tentative April 6 reopening date, roughly three weeks after Clovis Fire Department crews shut the facility down when a facade peeled away from the building's exterior.

Firefighters arrived at the location on March 17 at around 6 p.m. following a report of structural issues. The gym occupies a former CVS Pharmacy building, renovated for Planet Fitness, at the corner of Shaw and Clovis avenues near Sierra Vista Mall. Crews confirmed that the covered front entry area was pulling away from the building and that broader sections of the structure were separating from each other. The City of Clovis Building Division subsequently inspected the property and posted a formal "not safe to occupy" notice, triggering the immediate closure.

A safety fence was installed around the perimeter in the days that followed, and construction had resumed at the site by March 30, roughly one week ahead of the tentative reopening. The city stated it is working with the property's management, not solely Planet Fitness, to ensure the required corrections are completed, reflecting shared responsibility among the franchise group, the building's landlord, and their vendors.

Planet Fitness addressed the situation in a public statement: "The health and safety of our members and team members is a top priority at Planet Fitness. The franchise group is working diligently with its landlord and vendors on necessary repairs and plans to reopen as quickly as possible."

The closure cut off access at one of the more heavily trafficked fitness facilities in the area. The gym's Facebook page has logged 13,465 check-ins, and with memberships starting at $15 per month, the Shaw Avenue location ranks among the most affordable gym options in Fresno County. Planet Fitness directed displaced Clovis members to four other locations in Fresno, along with gyms in Madera and Reedley, and has offered perks including temporary access to those facilities and membership credits while repairs are finalized.

April 6 remains a tentative date, contingent on passing final inspections and receiving official clearance from the City of Clovis. The franchise has communicated the timeline directly to members and is directing them to the gym's social channels for final confirmation before returning to Shaw Avenue.
