Nine Clovis Unified seniors stepped into a different kind of signing day Thursday in Clovis, receiving a public sendoff as they prepared to enlist in the U.S. military in the weeks after graduation. The ceremony mirrored the fanfare of athletic signings, but the commitment on display was service, not sports.

Clovis Unified framed the event as part of a long-running culture of patriotism. The district has repeatedly used public ceremonies to recognize students taking a military path, and this spring’s gathering put nine graduates in the spotlight as another class crossed from high school into adult responsibility. ABC30 photojournalist Alex Ruiz captured the ceremony and the meaning it carried for the students and the country.

The district’s military recognition has become more visible over time. In 2021, all five Clovis Unified comprehensive high schools hosted military signing events that honored 51 students joining the armed services. Clovis High’s ceremony that year was its first-ever military signing day. Clovis North High held another military signing event in April 2024 for graduating seniors planning to join the Armed Services, and Clovis Unified said Buchanan High, Clovis East High and Clovis West High would also be part of the district’s lineup of celebrations.

That same-day momentum was on display again Thursday at Buchanan High School, where eight seniors were honored in a separate Military Signing Day ceremony. That event included a formal swearing-in, local veterans, challenge coins and support from the Central Valley Blue Star Mothers, showing how the district’s military sendoffs now reach beyond a single campus and into the broader Fresno County veteran community.

The local ceremonies also reflect a national pattern. Our Community Salutes recognizes high school seniors who plan to enlist immediately after graduation, and its 2025 impact report counted more than 4,300 new enlistees across 58 ceremonies in 25 states. In Clovis, the public recognition gives enlistment a place alongside college and career decisions that are usually celebrated on campus, while underscoring the district’s message that military service is a path worth honoring in front of the community.
