Fire collision shuts down Highway 180 near Piedra Road in Fresno County

Both directions of Highway 180 were blocked near Piedra Road in Fresno County after a collision sparked a vehicle fire, shutting down one of the county’s most important east-west routes with no estimated time for reopening.

The closure hit State Route 180 at a sensitive point for daily travel in eastern Fresno County. The highway is a primary link through the San Joaquin Valley and the main road many drivers use to reach Kings Canyon National Park, making the shutdown more than a local traffic delay. It can quickly ripple into freight movements, school commutes and foothill traffic because so much cross-county travel depends on that corridor.

Caltrans reported the closure Friday and told motorists to seek alternate routes. The shutdown landed in a county where transportation interruptions can carry broader economic weight. Fresno County says it is home to 1.88 million acres of some of the world’s most productive farmland, with agricultural operations covering nearly half of the county’s land base. That means an east-west closure on Highway 180 can affect not just commuters, but also the trucks and workers that keep farms, packing houses and related businesses moving.
