Five displaced after Southwest Fresno house fire tears through home

A fire tore through a two-story home on Cornell Avenue west of Brawley Avenue in Southwest Fresno, displacing a family of five and leaving the house heavily damaged. Crews arrived to heavy smoke and visible flames pouring from the home just before 4 p.m. Thursday.

Firefighters initially did not know whether anyone was inside, so they searched the structure before confirming that no one had been trapped. A total of 40 firefighters worked to contain the blaze, and the home was left with extensive damage.

The fire displaced two adults and three children, forcing the family out of the home and into immediate uncertainty over temporary housing, cleanup and insurance. No injuries were reported in the information released so far, but the fire destroyed the family’s ability to stay in the house.

The cause remains under investigation. In a city where the fire department has served residents since 1877 and now operates 20 stations, even a single residential blaze can pull a large response and leave a lasting disruption behind. The department’s public incident dashboard tracks 23,421 incidents, 235 displaced persons and $15,111,714 in property loss, a reminder of how quickly one structure fire can become a broader emergency.

Southwest Fresno has seen this kind of displacement before. A house fire in the neighborhood in 2025 forced 19 people from their homes, underscoring how vulnerable older residential blocks can be when flames spread fast and crews have to determine, within minutes, whether anyone is still inside.
