Fog Machine Left On Triggers False Alarm at Fresno Church
A fog machine accidentally left running at NorthPointe Church in northwest Fresno triggered an automated fire alarm Wednesday night, bringing out firefighters who found smoke but no flames.

A forgotten fog machine sent Fresno firefighters rushing to a northwest Fresno church Wednesday night, only to find a haze-filled sanctuary with no fire and no damage.
The Fresno Fire Department dispatched crews to NorthPointe Community Church on the evening of March 18 after an automated fire alarm reported smoke inside the building. Arriving firefighters found the building thick with smoke but confirmed no active flames anywhere on the property.
Officials determined the source quickly: a fog machine had been accidentally left on, pumping artificial haze through the sanctuary until the alarm system picked up the density and triggered the emergency response. No damage was reported as a result of the incident.

The call underscores a quirk familiar to fire departments across the country: fog machines, which churches, theaters, and event venues frequently use for lighting effects and productions, produce a fine aerosol dense enough to fool modern smoke detectors. In this case, the automated alarm system functioned exactly as designed, alerting the department to what sensors registered as a smoke condition.
The Fresno Fire Department has not publicly identified which units responded or how many personnel were deployed to the scene. No injuries were reported. NorthPointe Church has not issued a public statement about whether any activities or services were affected by the response.
