Jesse Hernandez, 72, of Fowler was killed Tuesday when a Toyota Camry crossed into his lane and struck his Ford F-250 head-on at the intersection of Central and DeWolf Avenues, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The Camry's driver, suspected of driving under the influence, attempted to leave the scene after the collision on March 18. CHP officers apprehended the suspect before they could escape. The driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI in connection with Hernandez's death.

The intersection of Central and DeWolf Avenues sits in the agricultural corridor southeast of Fresno, where two-lane roads connect Fowler and surrounding farming communities. Head-on collisions on these stretches have historically proven deadly, with little physical barrier separating oncoming traffic.

CHP is continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crash. No additional details about the suspected driver's identity or charges have been released.

Hernandez was a resident of Fowler, a small city of roughly 6,000 people in southern Fresno County. His death marks one of the starkest reminders of the danger impaired drivers pose on the county's rural roads, where emergency response times are longer and high-speed collisions leave little margin for survival.
