Eddie Wutangsy, 31, the face and sole engine behind My Guy Market at Belmont and Roosevelt, was hospitalized at Community Regional Medical Center last week after suffering sudden heart failure, forcing the closure of his downtown Fresno shop while supporters have already raised more than $21,000 through a GoFundMe campaign.

Wutangsy's mother, Melinda Marmolejo, who launched the fundraiser, described the shock of the diagnosis in stark terms. "He just ran a half-marathon over his birthday weekend in Vegas," Marmolejo said. "He had, like, the best two weeks. He knocked it out of the park with his business, and then he was just knocked down out of nowhere, really."

Wutangsy himself spoke about the diagnosis. "It just kind of happened out of the blue," he said. "I had some symptoms that had just been stacking up on me, it's just a rare occasion." His medical team is still working to determine the precise cause of his condition and the best treatment path forward.

My Guy Market, which Wutangsy runs out of a ghost kitchen with no indoor seating, built its reputation on bodega-style chopped cheese sandwiches. The Fresno Bee named it the best sandwich in Central California in both 2024 and 2025. His sister, Nunu Sixsay, confirmed the restaurant is his only source of income, underscoring the financial stakes of an extended absence from the kitchen.

The outpouring from the downtown Fresno community that Wutangsy helped shape has been immediate. Friend and coworker Daniel Cuevas pointed to something deeper than the food. "The authenticity, the way he presents himself, the way he talks about his community and how much he loves Fresno and especially downtown Fresno, is just unmatched," Cuevas said.

The family reports Wutangsy is already showing signs of improvement at Community Regional Medical Center. The GoFundMe, organized by Marmolejo under "Support Chef Eddie's Recovery," had surpassed $21,000 as of Tuesday.
