Fresno County drivers were staring at a painful spread at the pump: regular gas averaged $5.93 a gallon after AAA reported a 27-cent jump in one week, while one Northwest Fresno station had Flex Fuel posted at $2.99 a gallon. In a county where most people rely on cars for work, school runs and errands, that gap can look like an easy win until the wrong nozzle goes into the wrong tank.

AAA said California’s average regular gas price stood at $6.088 a gallon on May 2, 2026, compared with a national average of $4.433. County averages are updated daily, but the larger pattern is clear enough for Fresno County families: fuel costs are still pressuring household budgets, and even a few cents at the pump can add up fast across a week of commuting.

That cheaper Flex Fuel option is not for every vehicle. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says E85 is a blend of gasoline and denatured ethanol containing up to 85 percent ethanol, and it can only be used in flex-fuel vehicles designed to run on it. The EPA also says E85 typically reduces fuel economy and range by about 20 percent to 30 percent because ethanol carries less energy than gasoline, which means a lower price per gallon does not always translate into lower cost per mile.

Dennis Montalbano of German Auto Repair warned that using Flex Fuel in a non-flex-fuel vehicle can do real damage. He said the mix can harm engines and parts that contain rubber or other sensitive materials, and that it can swell and deteriorate components in carburetors and related systems. For drivers trying to stretch a tank, the risk is that a small savings at the pump can become a much larger repair bill later.

The simplest check is to make sure the car is specifically designed for E85 before filling up. The EPA says flex-fuel vehicles use specially designed fuel systems and components, and California says there are more than 137 E-85 fueling sites available for state flex-fuel vehicles statewide. Fresno has multiple E85 stations listed in local directories, but availability does not change the basic rule: if the vehicle is not built for it, the cheaper fuel is not a bargain.

For Fresno County’s 1,024,125 residents spread across nearly 5,959 square miles, the warning is immediate and practical. Rising fuel prices are changing how people drive and what they consider a deal, but the label on the pump still matters more than the price on the sign.
