Fresno man arrested after neighbor dispute turns into stabbing

A 35-year-old Fresno man was booked into the Fresno County Jail on a murder charge after police said a neighbor dispute in the 2900 block of East Austin Way turned into a stabbing Sunday night. The violence drew Fresno police to the block near East Ashlan Avenue around 9:22 p.m., where officers found a man suffering from a wound.

Fresno Police Lt. Michael Pierce said officers responded to the scene after the confrontation escalated. Pierce said the suspect allegedly went to the victim’s home and physically assaulted him before stabbing him during the encounter.

Police later arrested the suspect after a short pursuit. A Fresno Bee Facebook repost identified him as Eric Kenneth Smith of Fresno.

The location puts the case squarely in a residential stretch of east Fresno where neighbors share close quarters, driveways and front yards, and where a dispute can spill quickly from argument to assault.
