More military jets are expected over Fresno Yosemite International Airport as the 144th Fighter Wing runs Iron Talon, a readiness drill designed to test how quickly the unit can move personnel, cargo and aircraft if it is called to respond.

For Fresno residents near the airport, the most immediate effect is practical: more takeoffs and landings, louder aircraft noise and a busier flight line than usual, especially on Saturday. The activity is planned, not a sign of an emergency, and it is part of the Air Force’s routine inspection and assessment cycle.

That matters locally because the 144th Fighter Wing is not just another unit passing through Fresno. The wing, headquartered at Fresno Air National Guard Base at the airport, dates back to April 4, 1948. Its mission includes air superiority, air defense at home and support for worldwide joint operations. In plain terms, the unit is expected to be ready to launch fast, move fast and sustain operations fast.

Iron Talon is testing exactly that. The exercise, which runs from April 15 through April 19, is meant to measure whether the wing can rapidly deploy people, equipment and aircraft on short notice. For taxpayers, that kind of drill is part of the price of keeping a combat-ready force in place: the airfield, aircraft and trained crews only matter if they can be put to work without delay when the mission comes.

The Fresno wing has been through similar readiness checks before. In late February and early March 2024, it conducted another military exercise to evaluate operational readiness and aircraft generation capabilities. In June 2024, about 120 Airmen and six F-15C Eagles took part in fighter integration training with Marine F-35Bs. On Jan. 11, 2026, the wing also participated in a deployment exercise called Winter Atlas in Fresno.

The stakes for the unit are also tied to the future of its aircraft. In April 2023, the Department of the Air Force selected the 144th Fighter Wing as one of the preferred locations to receive the F-15EX Eagle II, which is intended to replace the wing’s aging F-15C/D aircraft. That makes exercises like Iron Talon more than routine noise over the airport. They are part of the preparation needed to keep Fresno’s air defense role credible, current and ready for whatever comes next.
