Garage fire displaces three in northwest Fresno, no injuries reported

Smoke damage from a garage fire left three people without a place to stay in northwest Fresno, even though firefighters kept the blaze from spreading far beyond the home’s garage. The fire broke out at a home in the 3300 block of West Rialto Avenue and was reported shortly before 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Fresno Fire Department public information officer Josh Sellers said crews arrived to find smoke and flames coming from the residence. Early reports suggested someone might still be trapped inside, so firefighters immediately shifted into rescue mode. Officials later confirmed that all three residents had already gotten out safely.

Investigators believe the fire started in the garage, where most of the damage remained contained. Only minimal damage spread into the main living spaces, but the smoke was enough to displace the family. A separate report said several cats and dogs escaped unharmed. Firefighters remained at the scene afterward to handle hot spots and overhaul operations.

In all, 31 firefighters responded and brought the blaze under control in about 15 minutes, limiting what could have become a far more destructive fire in a dense northwest Fresno neighborhood. The American Red Cross contacted the family after the fire, though the residents declined assistance. The cause remains under investigation.

Fire officials said the confusion over whether anyone was still inside happened because the residents had gone back in and out of the house trying to fight the fire or recover pets. That detail became part of the department’s warning to neighbors: once a structure is on fire and you have made it out, do not reenter it. In a matter of minutes, a garage fire can threaten a roofline, walls and the rest of a home, turning a localized blaze into a displacement for an entire household.
