A fallen tree struck power lines at Hume Lake Christian Camps in the Sierra National Forest on Feb. 23, 2026, triggering a fire that destroyed the Fir Dorm and damaged multiple buildings, camp leaders said. No injuries were reported, and camp administrators estimate preliminary repair costs exceed $1 million.

The winter storm that moved through Fresno County’s mountain jurisdiction snapped and toppled hundreds of trees across camp property, leaving crushed vehicles at the Wagon Train Pavilion, a fallen tree blocking the road in front of Whispering Pines, and a bridge covered in snow. Hume Lake Christian Camps’ site lists additional damage at Bear Paw Staff Lodge, the Ark and Ranch House with snow piles and downed communications lines, and snow outside Ponderosa Dining.

Bill Carroll, senior director of operations at Hume Lake Christian Camps, described the incident as an unprecedented event in his experience at Hume. “This is very unique, and I've been around Hume through fires and floods,” Carroll said, adding, “This is another for the record books of just craziness.”

Camp officials reported that scheduled sessions were canceled during the storm, so no campers were present when the tree struck power lines and the cabin burned. The camp’s public update states, “Though the damage is extensive, we are thankful for the ongoing efforts of staff and volunteers! We are prepared to provide a safe experience for the remaining weekends of winter camp.”

Hume Lake Christian Camps has launched the Summer Starts Here Fund to raise money for reconstruction and to prepare the site for summer ministry. The camp’s appeal asks supporters to “prayerfully consider supporting the Summer Starts Here Fund, our dedicated restoration effort to repair the damage and ready camp for life-changing ministry.” For immediate questions or to coordinate donations or volunteer support, Hume lists the Information team phone at 1 (559) 305-7770.

Cleanup and assessment work remains active on site as staff and volunteers clear downed trees, repair roofs and restore communications and power lines. Camp leaders say the next priorities are stabilizing damaged structures, documenting losses for insurers, and securing funds to rebuild in time for the summer season after nearly 80 years of ministry at Hume Lake.
