A Kingsburg man is sheltering in place outside Guadalajara after his flight was canceled amid violent unrest following a Mexican military operation that targeted Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as El Mencho. He asked to remain anonymous and described road blockages, burning vehicles and a heavy cartel presence near the town where he is stranded.

"I feel okay right now where I am, but I am still kind of uneasy just because I don't know what's going to happen next," the Kingsburg man said in a virtual interview. He said, "All the main roads or block any sort of access to Guadalajara are blocked right now," and added, "The large vehicles are also being set on fire." He also said, "I think the town right next to us has a heavy cartel presence."

Travel disruptions reached Fresno-area passengers as flights to and from Guadalajara were canceled or delayed at Fresno-Yosemite International Airport. A woman identified under the pseudonym Maria said she hoped her delayed flight would be called off: "You're better off just holding off and canceling because even if you fly out, there's just no way out of the airport." Another traveler at the airport said flatly, "It's just not safe at all to fly."

Downtown Fresno travel agent Laura Martinez, who manages Alba Travel, said the agency's office phone has been "ringing non-stop with worried customers who are stuck in Mexico." Martinez said, "It seems like the roads are clean right now, but the problem is no one wants to go out, so they don't have a way to go to the airport and the transportation is not 100% back in." She added, "Now I am going to think about it before going because it's a risk. Right now, it's a risk," and warned, "I'm worried because of what is happening. I am worried because we don't know what can happen. I mean, they are mad. They are out of themselves and they can do whatever. They have guns and they can just do whatever they want." Martinez said airlines have been cooperating with travelers and that the agency could see fewer travelers in coming weeks if unrest continues.

Tourists and U.S. citizens stranded in affected towns described tense conditions. Colleen Echohawk said hotel staff advised guests not to travel to the airport: "We're like about an hour from going to the airport. The team here at the hotel were like, 'Hey, you don't wanna go right now,'" and she added, "We're just gonna be patient and support each other and just try to get out of here as soon as we can." Photographer Travis Dagenais described the streets as chaotic: "It really did look and feel like a war zone. That feeling of what does happen next or what could happen next." Observers reported suspected organized crime members setting buses on fire, blocking roads and clashing with authorities.

Mexican officials say the military operation targeted El Mencho, the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel; some accounts describe his death in that operation while other reports have used the phrase capture and death. Related coverage has cited large casualty figures, but eyewitnesses quoted here did not provide a confirmed toll.

The immediate effect on Fresno-area travel and downtown businesses is tangible: cancelled Guadalajara flights, stranded Valley residents and travel agents preparing for a drop in bookings. Local travelers and families remain caught between disrupted schedules at Fresno-Yosemite International Airport and uncertainty on the ground in Jalisco as authorities and residents contend with the unrest.
