Laton family displaced after house fire destroys home, vehicles
Laton family escaped a fire that destroyed their home and two cars, but six people now need housing after the Saturday blaze.

A Laton family of six lost its home and two cars in a fast-moving fire that started in vehicles outside their Castro near Tache Avenue house before dawn, leaving everyone alive but homeless.
Laton fire crews reached the home shortly before 8 a.m. Saturday and found it engulfed in flames. Officials later said the residence was a total loss. No injuries were reported, which turned what could have been a tragedy into a housing emergency for a family now facing the immediate task of finding somewhere to stay and replacing the essentials they lost.
The fire appears to have begun in two cars parked outside the home before spreading to the residence, but investigators had not determined the cause. A fundraiser for the family says the blaze broke out around 7:30 a.m. on April 18, 2026, while the household was asleep and that someone knocked on the window to wake them in time. The same fundraiser says the father and two younger boys were at a soccer game when the fire started.

The family told ABC30 Action News that three people were inside the house during the fire and that they were grateful everyone survived. The GoFundMe organized by Adrian Leon in Laton says the family lost everything, including both cars, which were used to get to work, along with clothing, belongings and the home itself.
In a small community like Laton, where the population was 1,967 in the 2020 census, one house fire can ripple far beyond a single address. With fewer nearby resources than a larger city, families often depend on neighbors, relatives, churches and community fundraisers to get through the first days after a loss like this. The immediate challenge now is finding short-term shelter while longer-term decisions about insurance, rebuilding or relocation are worked out.

The fire also served as a warning for nearby households about the danger posed by vehicles parked close to a home. This was not the first time a fire near Laton has displaced multiple people. In March 2025, Fresno County fire officials reported a blaze outside Laton on Cedar Street that forced nine people, including two children, to leave their home, though no one was injured. In both cases, the best outcome was that everyone got out safely, but the cost was still steep: a family uprooted, a home destroyed and a rural community left to absorb the loss.
