Local theaters offer tickets for food bank donations this holiday
Maya Cinemas and the Maya Cinemas Foundation launched a holiday fundraiser that lets customers donate ten dollars to a local food bank in exchange for two movie tickets. The drive runs through Dec. 23, and proceeds go entirely to local food banks, offering a low barrier way for Fresno County residents to support neighbors facing hunger.

Maya Cinemas and the Maya Cinemas Foundation opened a holiday food bank fundraiser on Nov. 26 that continues through Dec. 23, giving moviegoers a direct way to support local food banks during a peak season for need. For a ten dollar donation at Maya Cinemas locations customers receive two movie tickets that can be redeemed Jan. 1 through Feb. 28, and the full donation is sent to a local food bank.
The program aims to harness routine entertainment spending to boost donations at a time when food banks typically face higher demand and thinner stocks. Fresno County residents who already visit theaters can participate without a separate commitment of time or complex arrangements, which lowers barriers to charitable giving for many households.
Food insecurity has wide reaching public health implications. Access to reliable nutritious food affects chronic disease management mental health and childhood development, and holiday season shortages can worsen existing health disparities. Local food banks act as a critical safety net for households that fall through program gaps or face temporary economic shocks. Smaller fundraisers that channel unrestricted cash to food banks help organizations purchase culturally appropriate and nutritionally balanced food and cover operating costs such as refrigeration transportation and staffing.

While community driven campaigns provide immediate relief they are not a substitute for long term policy measures that address the root causes of food insecurity. Sustained investments in nutrition assistance programs accessible enrollment for benefits and local infrastructure for food distribution are needed to reduce reliance on emergency food systems. For now the Maya Cinemas initiative offers a practical short term boost to local providers and a simple opportunity for neighbors to contribute.
The fundraiser also highlights equity issues in how communities respond to hunger, showing that outreach and low friction donation options can expand participation across income levels. As the drive continues through Dec. 23 residents who wish to support local food banks can donate at Maya Cinemas and help strengthen the county safety net during the holidays.
