Missing Fresno Teen Found in Watsonville Hotel, Man Charged with Statutory Rape
A 15-year-old girl reported missing from Fresno was found at a Watsonville hotel with Darwin Linares, 24, who now faces statutory rape charges.
Watsonville Police received information on March 17 that a 15-year-old girl reported missing in Fresno was believed to be in Watsonville. According to Watsonville Police spokeswoman Erika Vazquez, the department received a report of the missing girl on Tuesday, and three hours later WPD detectives, the Santa Cruz County Anti-Crime Team, and the Santa Cruz County Auto Theft Reduction and Enforcement Team found her at a hotel on the 100 block of Airport Boulevard, where she was with Darwin Linares.
Linares, 24, was booked into Santa Cruz County Jail on charges of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor. He was arrested at the scene. He was not in custody on Thursday, jail records showed.
The hotel sits on the 100 block of Airport Boulevard, near Freedom Boulevard. The rapid three-hour turnaround from report to recovery was made possible by the coordinated response of multiple county-level task forces working alongside Watsonville detectives, a joint deployment that proved critical in locating the girl before the situation could deteriorate further.
The teen is safe, and the investigation is ongoing, police said. It was not clear how Linares met the girl or how she got to Watsonville; police on Thursday were still investigating that part of the case. Investigators do not believe there were any other victims, Vazquez said.
The case carries particular weight for Fresno County families. A 15-year-old traveling more than 200 miles from the Central Valley to a Santa Cruz County hotel with a 24-year-old man raises urgent questions about how the contact was made and what preceded her disappearance, questions police have not yet answered publicly. Watsonville police said they could not release additional details while the investigation remains active.
Unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, the charge Linares faces, is California's statutory rape statute and applies regardless of claimed consent when one party is under 18 and the other is an adult. Linares's current custody status remains unconfirmed pending updated jail records.
