Krystal Marie Jackson, 44, a former teacher at Mountain View School in Reedley, was sentenced Thursday after the Fresno County Sheriff's Office arrested her in 2021 following an investigation into her relationship with a student. The 14-year-old boy was enrolled in an independent study program that required weekly meetings with a teacher at Dunlap Leadership Academy, and detectives said the crimes occurred during those meetings.

Jackson, who previously taught in the Kings Canyon Unified School District, was ordered to register as a sex offender for 20 years as part of her plea deal. She had originally been booked on four counts of rape, along with single counts of continuous sex abuse of a minor, oral copulation with a child, lewd acts with a child, communicating with a child to commit a felony, and meeting with a child for lewd purposes. Under a plea agreement, those charges were reduced. Jackson pleaded no contest to one count of unlawful sex with a minor and one count of oral copulation of a person under 16.

Judge Raj S. Badhesha sentenced Jackson to one year in the Fresno County Jail, plus three years of formal probation. She must also stay away from the victim for 10 years and is prohibited from working with children. Jackson was taken into custody immediately after her sentencing.

The boy's father addressed the court before the sentence was handed down, his voice breaking as he described the toll the abuse has taken on his family. "Don't let her spend another day out of jail," he said. "No one worried about my kid, no one worried about what happened to my kid or what he goes through every day because of this. He hasn't come out of his bedroom in a year." He added: "This is killing me, my son, my other two boys, the other part of my family."

The Fresno County District Attorney's office defended the outcome. Taylor Long, the office's public information officer, said the sentencing reflected multiple factors, including the nature of the charges and Jackson's lack of any prior criminal history. "It's also important to note that sentencing ultimately rests with the court," Long said. "While probation was part of the negotiated resolution, the judge exercised their discretion to impose additional accountability by ordering one year in custody at the Fresno County Jail." Long said the office is satisfied with the outcome and noted that Jackson received double the amount of time she has to register as a sex offender.

The Fresno County Sheriff's Sex Crimes Unit and the Central California Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force led the investigation after receiving allegations about Jackson. Kings Canyon Unified School District said student and staff safety remains a top priority and that counseling and support services were offered to those in distress following Jackson's arrest.
