Truck driver dies in big rig rollover near Avenal on I-5

A big rig rollover on Interstate 5 killed its driver near Avenal and renewed attention on one of western Fresno County’s busiest freight corridors. The crash happened Friday morning, around 10:30 a.m., just north of Avenal Cutoff Road.

The California Highway Patrol said the truck tractor, a white 2020 Freightliner Cascadia pulling a trailer, was traveling north when the driver steered into the center median for reasons that remain under investigation. The impact caused both the tractor and trailer to overturn. Officers said the driver was partially ejected and suffered fatal injuries, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators have not determined whether alcohol or drugs played any role. CHP said the cause of the crash remains under review.

The deadly rollover adds to concern about safety on the Interstate 5 freight route through Fresno County. Caltrans identifies Interstate 5 as part of California’s state truck network, and district project materials list an I-5 Fast Freight Corridor in Fresno County, underscoring how heavily commercial traffic relies on this stretch of freeway. When a truck leaves the roadway here, the question reaches beyond one crash scene and into the design and demands of a corridor built to carry long-haul freight, farm goods and regional traffic at highway speed.

That broader context is hard to ignore after another recent Fresno County I-5 rollover killed a 62-year-old Manteca man. Two deadly semi-truck crashes on the same corridor in a short span have sharpened the focus on what investigators look at after a big rig overturns, including speed, fatigue, distraction, mechanical problems, medical emergencies, and whether median conditions or traffic patterns contributed.

CHP said crash reports can later be requested through its public records process, which may add more official details as the investigation develops. For now, the fatal wreck near Avenal stands as another reminder of how quickly a routine freight run on I-5 can turn deadly in western Fresno County.
