Vacant Fresno Dollar General Market building burns, no injuries reported
Flames ripped through a boarded-up Dollar General Market at McKinley and Fruit, forcing a second-alarm response and exposing the risks of vacant central Fresno buildings.

A boarded-up Dollar General Market at McKinley and Fruit avenues burned late Tuesday night, forcing Fresno Fire Department crews into a defensive fight after flames pushed through the roof.
Firefighters were called to the vacant store just before 11:30 p.m. after multiple reports of a blaze. When crews arrived at the central Fresno site, they found heavy fire showing from the roof and quickly shifted to a defensive attack because of the building’s size and condition. A second alarm was called to bring in additional help. One account said 57 firefighters responded.
Crews later entered through one of the roll-up doors and knocked down the flames. The fire was contained to about half the building, and no injuries were reported.
Officials said the building’s boarded-up windows and welded-shut doors made the response more difficult. Fresno Fire Department spokesman Joshua Sellers also said the vacant store was known to be frequented by unhoused people, underscoring how an empty commercial shell can still create risk for people living nearby and for the crews sent in when it ignites.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation. But the blaze added to a pattern that has worried city leaders and fire crews in the Blackstone and McKinley corridor, where three vacant buildings burned in a two-week span in February 2026. After those fires, the City of Fresno expedited demolition of some vacant structures in the area.
The fire also landed in a part of central Fresno already being reshaped by the Blackstone-McKinley grade-separation project, which has brought eminent-domain action on nearby parcels and added pressure to businesses and empty lots around the corridor. The site itself has a long commercial history: the building had previously been scheduled to close as the former Save Mart at Fruit and McKinley in February 2012 before later becoming the Dollar General Market that now sits vacant.
For Fruit and McKinley, the fire was more than another overnight call. It was another reminder that abandoned commercial buildings can become active public safety problems long before any demolition crew arrives.
