A vegetation fire near Laton was held to about 15 acres with no homes threatened, but the blaze showed how quickly early-season flames can take hold in the dry river bottom east of town. The fire burned at E De Woody St and E Riverdale Ave, where CAL FIRE said the ground conditions and limited access made the response harder from the start.

The Dale Fire was first reported May 15 at 12:04 p.m. and had reached 15 acres and 50% containment by 5:40 p.m., with forward progress stopped. CAL FIRE said crews remained on scene for the next four hours, backed by 8 engines, 1 water tender and 3 other resources. Numerous firefighting air tankers also flew suppression missions as conditions allowed. The cause remained under investigation.

The fire’s location matters in a county where rural response time and access can shape outcomes. Laton is an unincorporated census-designated place in Fresno County with a population of 1,967 at the 2020 census, and the Laton Community Services District provides water, sewer, garbage, street lights and fire protection services for the community. In places like Laton, narrow roads, river-bottom fuels and scattered development can leave less room for error when a fire starts.

No evacuation warning or order was issued for the Dale Fire, but Fresno County maintains a public fire mapping system that lets residents check an address for evacuation warnings or orders. That kind of tool is especially important in unincorporated areas, where neighbors may be farther from city fire stations and where a fast-moving grass or brush fire can turn a few minutes into a major difference in exposure.

The fire also comes as smoke remains a public health concern across the West. AirNow says wildfire smoke is affecting air quality in multiple states and advises residents to use its Fire and Smoke map to track local impacts. For Fresno County, where wildfire risk is already high, the Laton fire is a reminder that the next hot, windy stretch can arrive before communities have fully reset from the last one.
