A woman was stabbed multiple times in broad daylight at one of downtown Fresno’s most recognizable intersections, putting the city’s central core back under a harsh safety spotlight just after 9 a.m. Friday at Inyo and F streets.

Police said the woman was stabbed in her upper body and hand. She was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive, but investigators have not publicly identified a suspect, described a motive or announced an arrest.

The attack happened in the middle of the morning, when downtown Fresno is already moving with workers, visitors and people passing through the area. That makes the case stand out beyond a routine crime report: it happened in a place many Fresno residents know well, and in a part of the city that has been trying to project stability as downtown activity continues to rebuild.

The Fresno Police Department has not said whether the attack was random or targeted. For now, the case remains open-ended, with few details beyond the time, location and injuries.

The stabbing also comes as police are increasing enforcement across Fresno after a recent spike in violence. The department launched a violent-crime suppression operation over the weekend in response to recent murders, shootings and multiple stabbings. Chief Mindy Casto said the effort has already led to 48 felony arrests, 53 misdemeanor arrests, contact with 124 gang members in the city and the recovery of 15 crime guns.

Downtown has already seen a cluster of violent incidents in recent weeks. Earlier April stabbing cases near Art Hop led to arrests, and police have been dealing with repeated calls around the same part of the city. That pattern has sharpened concerns about whether the center of Fresno, including busy spots near Art Hop and other familiar downtown blocks, can feel safe during normal daytime hours.

For the city’s recovery efforts, incidents like this are more than isolated crimes. They affect how people move through downtown, how businesses judge daily risk and how confidence in the area is shaped by what happens at street level, in the middle of the workday.
