Goochland baseball blanks Fauquier 6-0 for first postseason win since 2018

Goochland’s baseball team finally cracked the postseason barrier that had hung over the program for years, blanking Fauquier 6-0 in the VHSL Class 3 Region B quarterfinals and earning the Bulldogs’ first playoff win since 2018. As the No. 1 seed, Goochland improved to 18-4, while Fauquier, from Warrenton, finished 10-11.

The breakthrough came on the arm of junior right-hander Charlie Harrington, a Class of 2027 prospect listed by Prep Baseball Report as a right-handed pitcher and outfielder from Goochland High School. Harrington needed just 77 pitches to work through the game, threw 60 strikes, struck out eight and walked none. Fauquier managed only one hit and put just three runners on base, none of whom advanced past second. Harrington mixed his curveball, slider, changeup and fastball in the zone and kept Goochland’s defense involved from the first inning on.

That command gave the Bulldogs room to build pressure at the plate instead of waiting on one big inning. Goochland scored two runs in the first, fourth and sixth innings, a steady pattern that kept Fauquier from ever finding leverage. Jackson Bell’s head-first slide on a second-inning scoring play helped set the tone for a lineup that kept the bases busy and the dugout loud while the lead kept growing.

The result carried more weight than a single postseason win. Richmond.com and The Richmonder both noted that Goochland had not won a playoff game in eight years and had not done so since moving into the Jefferson District. For a program trying to establish itself in a new competitive home, the quarterfinal victory gave Goochland a concrete answer to a lingering question: could the Bulldogs turn strong regular-season play into a postseason breakthrough?

That question only grew sharper as the bracket tightened. Goochland beat Meridian 8-5 on June 2 in the Region 3B semifinals, then dropped the championship game 2-1 to Kettle Run on June 4. Even with the final loss, the run changed the tone around Goochland baseball. The 6-0 win over Fauquier was the night the Bulldogs stopped waiting for a postseason breakthrough and showed they could dictate one.
