Goochland DMV Select Office closes Friday amid state outage

Goochland County said the Goochland DMV Select Office will close Friday, July 19, because of a Virginia DMV outage. The shutdown will interrupt vehicle-related work for residents who use the local office at 1800 Sandy Hook Road, Suite 220, in Goochland.

The closure will matter most for drivers who were planning to handle title, registration or other DMV transactions without making the trip to Richmond. DMV Select offices are the local alternative to a customer service center, and Virginia DMV says the program lets contracted partners process select vehicle-related transactions in a secure environment.

Virginia DMV also says DMV Select partners have online access to DMV records, can update customer files immediately and can issue vehicle decals. That makes the Goochland office useful for quick in-person service when it is open, especially for commuters, new residents and anyone buying or selling a vehicle.

The county has already adjusted the office’s operation in recent months. Goochland County previously moved DMV Select to appointment-only service, then announced that it had returned to fully operational status as of Jan. 29, 2025. The July 19 closure adds another interruption for a local office that depends on statewide systems to function.

Virginia DMV says more than 50 services are available 24/7 online, giving residents another route when the Goochland office is unavailable. For anyone who needs in-person DMV Select service, the county’s notice is a reminder not to count on the office on July 19 and to plan around the outage instead of arriving at 1800 Sandy Hook Road expecting normal service.
