Goochland Elementary Students Rock Colorful Socks for World Down Syndrome Day
Goochland Elementary marked World Down Syndrome Day on March 20 by asking students, staff, and families to pull on their most colorful socks for an all-day awareness event.

Goochland Elementary School filled its hallways with mismatched, colorful socks on March 20 as students and staff observed World Down Syndrome Day through a school-wide activity the district called "Rock Your Socks for World Down Syndrome Day."
The school had listed March 20 on its calendar as an all-day spirit and awareness event, and an Instagram post from the school extended the invitation beyond the building: "This Friday, March 20, we're inviting all students, staff, and families to 'Rock Your Socks' in honor of World Down Syndrome Day!" Both Goochland Elementary's school page and the Goochland County Public Schools district page promoted the event with a dedicated "Rock Your Socks Graphic," signaling coordinated outreach across the district's communications channels.
World Down Syndrome Day is recognized internationally on March 21 each year, with the date chosen to represent the triplication of the 21st chromosome that causes Down syndrome. Goochland Elementary's observance fell on March 20, the Friday immediately preceding the official date.
The Rock Your Socks event was one of several community-focused activities visible on the school's pages in recent weeks. Goochland Elementary also held a Reading Olympics for fourth graders, complete with a breakfast send-off, literacy obstacle courses, BINGO for Books, and a free book giveaway. A guest named Dawson drew enthusiastic responses from both fourth and fifth grade students. The school also recognized Black History Month poster contest winners and posted a Career Day flyer.

On the student recognition front, the school congratulated its Students of the Month for January, February, and March. March honorees included Sawyer in pre-K, Faith in kindergarten, Abram in first grade, Ella in second grade, Rylan in third grade, Charlie in fourth grade, and Claire in fifth grade.
At the district level, the Goochland County School Board recently approved a calendar adjustment affecting the current school year: Tuesday, April 21 is now designated a Student Holiday and Staff Professional Learning Day. The change accommodates a special election scheduled for that date, with two Goochland County schools serving as polling sites. The names of those two schools were not specified in district communications.
