Blue ribbons pinned to shirts at Goochland Elementary School turned a schoolwide gesture into a public reminder that child protection often starts with adults children already know and trust. During Child Abuse Prevention Month, teachers joined a Wear Blue Day observance on April 10, reinforcing the school’s role in noticing concerns before they grow into a crisis.

Virginia recognized April 2026 as Child Abuse Prevention Month, matching the nationwide observance held every April. The effort carried added weight in Goochland, where principal Tina McCay says student safety is her top priority and Goochland County Public Schools says it is committed to students’ physical health, social-emotional well-being, behavioral needs and overall safety.

The local connection also ran through Virginia CASA, which says its mission is to promote safe, permanent homes for abused and neglected children and to educate the community about their needs. CASA volunteers are appointed by judges to advocate for children so they are not lost in the court and social-service system. The model now spans nearly 950 state organizations and local programs in 49 states and the District of Columbia, backed by more than 85,000 volunteers.

The timing was stark. A Virginia child-abuse-prevention resource cited 53,343 children involved in completed child protective services reports in 2025, a reminder that prevention work is not abstract. In schools, that reality makes trained staff and administrators crucial first observers when a child’s behavior, appearance, or home life raises concern.

For families and neighbors who suspect abuse or neglect, Virginia’s Child Protective Services hotline is 1-800-552-7096. In a county where school staff see children every day, blue ribbons at Goochland Elementary pointed to a simple message with serious stakes: prevention depends on attention, action, and adults willing to speak up early.
