Conner Emmert’s path to the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games runs through Goochland County and through a childhood defined by major medical challenges. Born with primordial dwarfism and later facing serious health issues, including a brain aneurysm and spinal fusion, the Goochland native is now headed to Minnesota as part of Team Virginia, a milestone his family says reflects both resilience and possibility.

Emmert did not find athletics until Goochland High School, where he discovered the Unified Special Olympics program and began competing in basketball and track and field. Coach Wes Farkas has described him as an athlete who gives 100% and keeps pushing himself and others, a reputation that has helped make Emmert a familiar name in local school circles. In a Goochland Schools bulletin tied to a Unified Track meet and the Special Olympics Torch Run, Emmert won his 100-meter heat, a reminder that his rise to the national stage has already been built on local results.

The 2026 Special Olympics USA Games are scheduled for June 20-26 in Minnesota and will bring together 3,000 athletes, 1,500 coaches, 10,000 volunteers and 75,000 fans. Special Olympics Minnesota says the Games will feature 19 sports. Emmert is one of 54 Virginia athletes and partners selected for the event, and he is set to compete in the mini javelin, the 100-meter dash and the 4-by-100-meter relay.

His story is also reaching a wider audience through Conner’s World, a 15-minute documentary produced by Special Olympics Virginia. The film will premiere April 23 at Ashland Theatre, followed by a question-and-answer session. The nonprofit venue in Ashland regularly hosts live entertainment, performing arts, special presentations, first-run movies and classic films, making it a fitting local stage for a story rooted in inclusion and perseverance.

Special Olympics Virginia says Emmert has been active across bocce, bowling, track and field, basketball and golf since fall 2024. For Goochland families who know him from the county’s schools and community programs, his selection is more than a trip to Minnesota. It is a hometown example of what can happen when support, access and determination come together, and it puts a Goochland athlete on one of the biggest inclusive sports stages in the country.
