Manakin Road to close for pipe replacement July 21-22

Manakin Road will close between Mount Olive Road and Three Chopt Road from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 21-22 for pipe replacement, forcing drivers to find alternate routes during the daytime work window. Goochland County said the closure will apply each day, Tuesday and Wednesday, while crews replace the pipe.

Virginia Department of Transportation posted a separate traffic alert for the shutdown, putting the road work on the state’s travel notice system as drivers move through the Manakin area. The alert reinforces that the closure is not a short lane restriction but a full daytime block on that stretch of road.

The Manakin Road work is part of a broader string of pipe-replacement projects in Goochland County that have relied on similar daytime closures. Hockett Road between River Road West and Snead Road closed July 1-2 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. for a cross-pipe replacement project, and Seay Road between Manakin Road and Shallow Well Road is scheduled to close Aug. 11-12 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for pipe replacement, with property access still allowed during the work.

The county has also tied the work to its Eastern Goochland sewer pipeline replacement project, which it said was expected to begin in March 2023 with substantial completion anticipated later that year. That project shows the pipe work is part of a longer utility effort, not an isolated repair, and it helps explain why local roads are being shut down in measured daytime blocks rather than left open through the work.

For drivers, the practical effect is simple: the Manakin Road corridor will not carry normal traffic between Mount Olive Road and Three Chopt Road during construction hours on July 21 and July 22. Anyone using that route will need to plan around the closure before the workday begins.
