Whiteout conditions and gusts reaching 45 mph are bearing down on Grand Traverse County, where the National Weather Service has placed the area under a Winter Storm Watch through 11 a.m. Saturday.

The forecast calls for 2 to 4 inches of snow accumulation across the county during daylight hours, with temperatures holding in the lower 20s and north winds sustained at 15 to 25 mph. The NWS warns that snow combined with those winds will produce whiteout conditions at times, with the Lake Michigan shoreline facing the worst visibility hazards.

The watch lands less than three weeks after a late-season storm buried Grand Traverse County under more than two feet of snow, with drifts reported as high as six feet in some areas. Emergency Manager Gregg Bird called that March event one of the most impactful winter weather incidents the county had seen in more than a decade, prompting full activation of the county's Emergency Operations Center and coordination between the road commission, central dispatch, law enforcement, fire, and EMS crews.

Road Commission Manager Dan Watkins, whose crews struggled to keep pace during the March storm, said that event was the worst the county had faced since 2012. Traverse City Streets Superintendent Chris Weber noted the city ran out of designated snow storage sites entirely during that storm, forcing crews to deposit snow in unconventional locations.

With that strain still fresh, Saturday's storm arrives at a moment when infrastructure and staffing are already stretched. Travelers heading into or out of Cherry Capital Airport should monitor flight status directly with airlines, as even moderate accumulations can disrupt ground operations at the facility. Bay Area Transportation Authority bus routes may also face service disruptions if roads deteriorate before the watch expires.

The watch remains in effect through 11 a.m. Saturday. Updated forecasts are available through the National Weather Service office in Gaylord.
